Jaded

This week I had the pleasure of chatting with Jaded, a four-piece rock band from Youghal on my radio program, we got a chance to talk about music, their smash hit video and life as a young group growing up in East Cork. I started with the usual questions following on from their success with their new video on Youtube. In a little over 2 months the video Jaded - a story so far directed by an uncle to one of the lads, has amassed a little over 110,000 hits, now that’s a lot of likes and most of them from foreign countries. So what’s the secret behind the success of this group?

The group formed just over eight months ago, The lads started out as a three-piece, on vocals and guitar Tadg Quirke (16), on bass and vocals Kevin Kearns (15), drums and vocals Conor Sloane (14), Then after a short time Aaron O' Shaughnessy (15) sat in with the lads during a session and his guitar playing and vocals brought the sound into a whole new dimension for the group so he was asked to sign on the dotted line and become a full time member of the group. The lads spent a lot of time rehearsing and getting a sound right and have quickly establishing a growing appreciation across venues in Cork and West Waterford as well as the online community.

In recent times they entered a busking competition, winning first place which is apt for this group as they have a tight sound and good musical ability. During the interview, the four lads answered each question put to them, like seasoned professionals, they exude confidence and commitment, spiced with sparkling good humor and a wonderful sense of fun. Tadg speaks the most; Aaron has a more mischievous presence, often making some far-fetched observation just for the laugh, not great for radio but for the moral of the group it’s a great balance and helps them all relax; Conor talks with calm self-assurance and is very much aware of where they plan to go as a group, whilst Kevin is un-phased by it all, relaxed and laid back.

The good thing about this group of lads is the choice of music that influences them is varied. This shows in their current program which comprises of 70% cover versions, reflecting the combined influences from Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bon Jovi, Foo Fighters, The Police, AC/DC and Jimi Hendrix. Original songs get a look in as well and no doubt over time they will get an increased share of the percentage of the program. With songs from the lads sounding young, fresh and full of the spirit of this generation they all take part in the writing process with Tadg and Kevin filling the 'Lennon and McCartney' role. If you get a chance to see this group in action check them out or view the video below to learn the full story.
